We were recently called out to a faulty gas oven . The gas oven was under the manufacturers guarantee according to the job report recieved from the client.
On attending the engineer was advised by the customer that they could smell gas but they had no idea were from. As a registered Gas Safe company this was investigated.
To the horror of the engineer the following leaking joint was found.

Someone had attempted to stem a gas leak by wrapping the pipework in white tape and cellophane.
Our engineer made the connection and gas installation safe and advised on what remedial work was required

SMEG was founded by Vittorio Bertazzoni in 1948 as Smalterie Metallurgiche Emiliane Guastalla (metal enamelling factory) in the village of Guastalla, Reggio Emilia, Italy. The company is still in the private ownership of the Bertazzoni family, with Roberto Bertazzoni the current chairman and CEO. The company remains headquartered in Guastalla
SMEG is best known for their 1950s-style retro style refrigerators (the FAB range). This domestic refrigerator has curved corners and comes in a variety of non-traditional colours (for example pastel blue, lime green, orange, yellow and pink) also even in themed patterns. The FAB range has now been extended to cover dishwashers, washing machines and also flue less gas fires.
In recent years SMEG has expanded their product range to include induction hobs, integrated washing machines and washer dryers. In addition, they have had very successful sales with the Opera range of freestanding range cookers, such as the A1, which has almost become a style icon, much like the famed FAB28 fridge and its derivatives.

These products, along with style-led design in other areas, has led to SMEG being regarded by consumers and the media as a leader in the industry in design and aesthetics.
SMEG’s status has become almost iconic and it can be seen on many of our regular television programmes. FAB fridges and fridge freezers can be seen in V for Vendetta and EastEnders and even Wallace and Gromit have a ‘SMUG’. Jamie Oliver regularly cooks on an A2 “Opera” range cooker; indeed SMEG appliances are regularly seen on cooking programmes in general.

Here at Huby Domestic Appliances we have been authorised SMEG repairers for many years. Whether you appliance is a Smeg Range Cooker, a Smeg dishwasher or even a FAB appliance we are able to carry out service work on your appliance and have full access to Smeg spare parts and technical backup. If you are searching for oven repairs there is a good chance that something is wrong with yours.
Gas ovens can fail because gas is not being delivered to the burner or there is a lack of ignition.
The first step to figuring out what to do to fix the problem.
The most obvious step is to check for blockage of the burner’s outlets. Often, food can spill onto the burner and clog it up. Fixing this is as simple as giving it a good clean with a stiff wire brush. This will dislodge the debris and the gas will be able to flow again. Remember though all repairs to gas appliances must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
If a blocked burner is not the cause of an ignition problem, carry out some basic tests on the ignition system. It may be obvious must check the electrical power supply is turned on or in the case of a battery operated system that the battery is not dead.
If the oven’s burner is able to ignite the gas but the oven still doesn’t heat up, the gasket on the door or the door hinges could be at fault.. New gaskets often don’t want to stay in place unless the right technique is used.
Sometimes, the oven won’t heat up because it does not receive a signal too. This happens when the oven’s setting control or timer has developed faults.
If you’re not experienced with oven repairs, the best option is to simply call a repairman. Professionals have the diagnostic tools they need to pin down problems that seem vague.
At Huby Domestic Appliances we also repair other appliances. When you call to get your oven fixed, be sure to ask about any other faulty appliances you may have. It is more cost effect to have them repaired at the same time.

Dishwashers, For Hands That Don’t Do Dishes

In most cases the early dishwasher was a domestic servant or the lady of the house.
The first dishwasher was a wooden dishwasher invented by Jeff Houghton in 1850. It was hand turned and really did no work.
History Of The Dishwasher
Dish-washing only became a issue with the introduction of porcelain tableware in the 18th century, and remained a minor element of the housework for most people. Breakages were more of a problem than cleaning, especially for rich people who used a lot of dinnerware and relied on servants to clean it.
The first patent for a mechanical dishwasher dates back to 1850, and it was granted to Joel Houghton for a wooden machine that splashed water on dishes and was operated with a hand turned crank as you can see in the above photo of the patent drawing for it. Quite a long way from today’s pot scrubbing dishwasher.
Frenchman Eugene Daquin invented another version in 1885. Daquins device involved a set of revolving hands that grabbed the dishes and plunged them into soapy water. It evidently looked so ferocious that in a review in the Scientific American it was written that the machine posed no danger to man or dishes.
Neither of these machines was practical and it was left to Joshephine Cochrane, an Illinois Society hostess who gave many dinner parties where dishes needed washing often to find a solution to the problem of needing a dishwasher that worked and really got the dishes clean. Not wanting her dishes broke she shopped around for a dishwasher with a gentle touch. Her search for a dishwasher that worked and was practical was unsuccessful so finally she said in frustration. ” If no one is going to invent a dishwasher that really works I’m going to invent a dishwashing machine myself.
She was good as her word and she built her first dishwashing machine in a garden shed. She twisted wire into racks to hold dishes and arranged the dishes on a rack she placed in a large copper boiler. A motor turned the rack around and around while hot soapy water was squirted up and over the dishes. The Cochrane dishwasher was a huge success and it wasn’t long before they started showing up in homes everywhere.
She patented her dishwasher in 1896 and sold copies of it to friends, family , hotels, restaurants and others. It even won a award at the 1893 Chicago World Fair.
But although Kitchen-Aid the company that grew from Cochrane’s Dishwasher business would eventually become a household name and a huge success initial sales were very disappointing.
Dishwasher historians attributed the early failure of the dishwasher to a combination of logistical and culture stumbling blocks. The early dishwashers required huge amounts of hot water at a time when it still took hours to heat enough water to fill a bathtub. In addition research showed that those early housewives didn’t mind washing dishes. It was the laundry that took up many hours of their time weekly.
The first electrically powered dishwasher did not come on the scene until 1922 but it was not until after World War II that the dishwasher finally caught on and finally ended up in many homes around the United States and Europe

I want to compliment Hubys on the service we have received for our Liebherr freezer. Gareth turned up this morning at 8.00am – west of Harrogate coming from Hull – he immediately set about diagnosing the fault. Unfortunately he did not have the required spare but will be back soon to fit it. It was a real treat to have such a pleasant young man who obviously was expert in doing his job. Well done Hubys!
